Creating a persona

Build a reusable character, then tailor that persona's role in each activity.

Create the reusable character

From the instructor area, open Personas and create the character participants will encounter. A persona represents the parts of a character that can travel across activities: name, identity, experience, speaking voice, temperament, and avatar.

Complete the character fields

  • Name: The name participants see in the conversation.
  • Description: A short summary shown in the instructor library.
  • Character Identity & Background: Stable experience, personality, and speaking voice.
  • Temperament: Default emotional state, perspective, and communication style.
  • Avatar: The visual identity reused wherever the character is cast.

Cast the persona in an activity

Open Activities, create or select a reusable activity, and choose the persona for a role in that activity. The activity holds shared case context or study material. The persona's role in the activity holds what is specific to this character:

  • its objective and stakes;
  • private facts it can reveal;
  • blind spots participants should uncover;
  • interaction archetype, such as client, Socratic tutor, facilitator, skeptical counterpart, or evaluator; and
  • optional prompts such as negotiation thresholds, objections, questions, and rubrics.

Use Create Activity on an existing persona to start a new activity with that persona already selected for its first role.

Configure temperament

Persona temperament supplies reusable defaults. A persona's role in an activity can override those defaults when a particular situation calls for different behavior.

Generate an avatar

Give the persona a memorable visual identity. Use the Generate Avatar button to create a portrait using Gemini image generation, choosing from style presets:

  • Photorealistic Headshot
  • Stylized 3D / Digital Animated
  • Modern Flat Vector
  • Comic / Graphic Novel
  • Editorial Watercolor

Choose where it is available

A persona can be created directly within your personal library or saved as a global template:

  • Save as Template: Use Save as Template to create a personal library copy available across your series.
  • Copy to Library: When exploring catalog personas in the Library, use Copy to Library to create an editable personal copy tailored to your curriculum.

Review before class

Test whether the persona:

  1. Combines the intended character identity with the activity-specific role.
  2. Expresses the intended emotional temperament without becoming unhelpful.
  3. Uses shared context consistently and reveals private role facts when appropriate.
  4. Does not volunteer every important detail immediately.
  5. Gives participants enough ambiguity to evaluate evidence and exercise judgment.
  6. Avoids unsupported sensitive, legal, medical, or institutional claims.

AI-assisted drafting can produce mistakes or introduce claims you did not intend. The instructor remains responsible for reviewing the persona before participants use it.
